Rescue Massage LOVES Blueberries!

REMEMBER –tee hee– this weekend at Rescue we’re serving Blueberry juice with each massage - FREE! January 30 & 31, 2010.

Blueberry Juice Improves Memory

The answer to a sharper memory may be as close as your grocer’s shelves. A recent study found that drinking a couple of cups of blueberry juice each day may give aging memories a boost.

Researchers led by Robert Krikorian of the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center tested people in their 70s with age-related memory problems. One group of volunteers drank 16 to 20 ounces of a commercially available blueberry juice every day for two months. The control group drank a non-juice beverage.

At the end of two months, those volunteers who drank blueberry juice showed significant improvements on learning and memory tests. “These preliminary memory findings are encouraging and suggest that consistent supplementation with blueberries might offer an approach to forestall or mitigate neurodegeneration,” the scientists wrote in a report published in the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Although previous animal studies had indicated that blueberries may help aging memories, until now there had been little actual testing of blueberries’ effect on people.

According to WebMD, the study also indicated that the volunteers who drank blueberry juice had reduced symptoms of depression and lower glucose levels.

Blueberries are one of nature’s richest sources of phytochemicals and antioxidants.

Ongoing studies are focusing on blueberries’ ability to protect against stroke and lessen brain damage in stroke victims, slow vision loss, prevent cancer, and relieve or prevent upper urinary tract and bladder infections.

Chronic Stress Causes Brain Damage - try MASSAGE!

stressed-out-womanWe’ve personally experienced what stress can do…that’s why we created RESCUE MASSAGE!

So stressed out you can’t think straight? Well, it turns out that’s not just a figure of speech. Long-term stress damages the brain, impairing everything from emotion and impulse control to certain big-picture analytical thinking.

“In essence, with chronic stress, you become more primitive,” says Amy Arnsten, professor of neurobiology at Yale University.

But before you stress out about that, consider Ms. Arnsten’s recent findings, published in the Sept. 7-11 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Her new research highlights ways in which this type of chronic-stress-induced brain damage can be not only stopped but reversed.

Turns out that when we have chronic stress, the brain gets flooded with an enzyme that effectively breaks down part of the structure (the dendritic spines) of the neurons in the prefrontal cortex, Ms. Arnsten explains.

So if we got rid of the enzyme (aka protein kinase C) - either by medication or natural stress reduction - the neurons would recuperate, right?

Indeed.

Healthy Alternative to Drugs…. Massage at Rescue!

mojito-cocktail

I saw this on today’s Daily Candy and wanted to post it. We love natural, old fashioned remedies (my mother was given a shot of whisky as a child to help her sleep when she had a cold). See what you think…it sounds like it even tastes good :-)

NATURAL NyQuil

As much as you’ll hear us brag that we never fall ill (largely due to copious amounts of garlic, onions and vitamin C) we do — once in a blue moon — get sick. And yes, we have chased the green dragon. NyQuil, DayQuil, other sorts of new fangled drugstore opiates in their generic versions. We will fess up. The stuff works!

But not this year. When one of us woke up last week with a throat tickle that blossomed into a gnarly case of the flu, we took it on with fresh produce, organic sweeteners and thimbles of liquor.

In place of Acetaminophen (pain and fever reliever), Dextromethorphan HBr (cough suppressant), and Doxylamine succinate (sleep aid) we used green chile, ginger, citric acid and booze — all herbal, if subtler, forms of the chemical stuff. A couple shots, errr, doses, of the stuff is perfect for sitting on the couch in a sweatshirt and sweating out your germs. Take that Big Pharma!

(One day’s dose)
ALL NATURAL NYQUIL

2 cups fresh mint leaves
1 cup water
1 cup agave nectar (sugar, honey work)
1 small ginger bulb
1 lemon

1 tsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 Tbs. roasted green chile
2 shots Pastis
2 shots Southern Comfort

1. Start off making a mint simple syrup. Pluck 35-40 mint leaves off their stems, this should yield about 2 cups of mint. Roughly chop half the mint (set half aside for later use) and add to a saucepot with 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil and let simmer for about 5-8 minutes. Remove from heat and strain the leaves out. Put just the mint tea back on a medium heat and wait until back to a full boil. Add agave nectar, mixing, and let cook 1 minute before removing. Set aside to cool.

2. Ready your other veggies for the blender. First peel the ginger and slice into matchsticks. Next, zest your lemon, place the zest into a small dish and cover with 1 tsp. of good quality olive oil.

3. Toss the ginger, green chile and remaining cup of fresh mint to the blender. Add lemon juice. Finally add half the mint syrup, setting the rest aside for garnish. Pulse thoroughly for up to a minute. (Note: If you do not have the luxury of having authentic green chile, try subbing in a roasted jalapeño. Remove the seeds and use half in place of green chile.)

4. Strain the mixture into a bowl. Use a spoon to slush it around, allowing it to pass through the sieve or fine mesh strainer. Now you have the fresh juice part of your elixer! Taste it with a spoon, if it seems too tart or spicy, add more mint syrup one teaspoon at a time.

5. Mix. The basic proportion is one-part juice to one-part pastis to one-part whiskey. For a single dose: measure out a tablespoon of each into a cocktail shaker. Add a teaspoon of lemon zest oil. Complete with 3 ice cubes and shake fervently. Pour into a shot glass or desert wine snifter.

Massage Helps Your Brain, Your Brain Controls Your Body

womantry

If your eyes go bad, you’ll visit the eye doc. If you’ve got a bad elbow you’ll see the specialist. Yet, most people never consider the health of their brain. Probably because they cannot see it.

But, here’s the truth. If you want a better body, START by improving your brain. I read this today, and it was written by a clinical neuroscientist, psychiatrist and brain-imaging expert named Daniel G Amen, M.D. He became interested in the mind body connection 30 years ago.

I’ve always lived my life knowing that my thinking affects my body, and I’ve had amazing healings based on thinking ‘right’. I happen to have a strong faith in God and understand that my health has been mostly perfect due to my ‘right thinking’.

Dr. Amen believes a key issue is the effect of chronic stress, which:

*Constricts blood flow to your brain

*Lowers overall brain function

*Prematurely ages your brain…

Unfortunately, for many, the stress reactions never stop. This ongoing stress can stem from many areas of your life, including:

* Family and marital discord

* Financial hardship

* Health issues

* Work or career conflicts

* Time management problems

He writes about how the ‘RIGHT’ smells can have a positive impact on your mood and stress level… Want to know more? Look for Dr. Amen’s 19 published books.

In the mean time, get yourself into RESCUE - where it smells great, is calm and nurturing. One hour a week will make a positive shift in your attitude and ability to deal with stress. Ask our therapists about our simple 3-step process to slow it down, chill it down, and turn-off the stress like a light switch!
